Amman, 24 September 2021 (TDI): The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan condemned Israel for its persistent desecration of the Al Aqsa Mosque in occupied East Jerusalem, Palestine, and demanded an immediate cessation of the deplorable actions.

The statement on the behalf of the country was given by the Spokesperson of the Jordanian Foreign Ministry, Haitham Abu Al Foul.

The most recent example of Israeli perpetration and violence is the current break-in by extremists into the mosque. The extremist did so under the protection of the Israeli forces.

Haitham Abu Al Foul enunciated the stance of Jordan by stating that such practices aren’t acceptable. He said that such acts are an outright violation of international law.

The extremist attack also blatantly violates the historical and legal status quo in East Jerusalem. The Foreign Ministry Spokesperson highlighted the religious significance of the Mosque for the Muslims.

He also pointed out that, as per international law, the Al Aqsa Mosque, with its total area of 144 dunums, comes under the authority of the Jordan-run Jerusalem Awqaf and Aqsa Affairs Department.

Jerusalem Awqaf and Aqsa Affairs Department

The Jerusalem Awqaf and Aqsa Affairs Department is managed by Jordan to control the Al-Aqsa Complex. Hence, the King of Jordan presently provides and manages the funding needed to run the department.

Al-Aqsa Mosque

The Al-Aqsa Mosque is the third holiest site in the world for Muslims. Al-Aqsa is located in the Old City of Jerusalem. The sanctuary comprises the mosque itself, the four minarets, the Dome of the Rock, & the compound’s historic gates.

The Jews refer to Al-Aqsa as the “Temple Mount.” They claim that it is the site of two Jewish temples in ancient times.

East Jerusalem

Israel occupied East Jerusalem, where the Al-Aqsa is located, during the 1967 Middle East War. However, it formally annexed the entire city in 1980.

Israel claims it as its capital. Nevertheless, the international community doesn’t recognize these claims by Israel.
