Islamabad, 28 August 2021 (TDI): On August 27, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus; WHO Director-General released a Joint Statement from the third meeting of the Multilateral Leaders Taskforce. The meeting mostly comprised of the heads of major institutions like IMF, World Bank, WHO, and WTO. The statement contemplated the issue of vaccine inequality predominantly in the region of Africa.
Further discussing the ratio of vaccinated people, they discussed the grim percentage of adult vaccinated people in the third world, low-income countries are less than 2% which has a stark difference to that of first world countries, where almost 50% of the adult population is fully vaccinated.
Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus showed his concerns about the inequality in the numbers of vaccinated people between the different tiers of countries. He apprehended that this stark difference will become an obstacle in achieving the result of uniform development as it will create an unambiguous difference in the survival rates and the universal economy.
The meeting ended with the call for action to the leaders to ensure the uniform and improved supply and practice of all COVID-19 tools and vaccines as it is a matter of universal health.
