On Friday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Wolesi Jirga of the National Assembly of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan convened the first meeting of the Wolesi Jirga Defense and Territorial Affairs Commission with members of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly via video conference. Mir Afzal Heydari, Chairman of the Committee on Defense and Territorial Affairs, Gerald Connolly, President of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly and the members of the Assembly as well as Nazifullah Salarzai, Ambassador to the Kingdom of Belgium, attended the meeting.
In the meeting, they addressed peace talks and the continuation of NATO support for Afghan security forces following the withdrawal of U.S. forces. The Afghan delegation expressed gratitude and appreciation to NATO for its assistance to Afghanistan over the past two decades. The delegation also expressed concern to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly about the withdrawal of international forces from the country.
The President and members of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly reaffirmed their respective commitment to ensuring Afghanistan’s stability, as well as their full support for the country’s security forces. In short, the representatives of Afghanistan’s National Assembly were comforted.
