Japan, 12 February 2024 (TDI): On February 12, 2024, a statement by Press Secretary Kobayashi Maki regarding Israeli military operations in Rafah was issued, expressing Japan’s response to the Israel-Gaza conflict.
Kobayashi Maki, the press secretary for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, emphasized Japan’s response to Israel’s military operation in Rafah. He stated that the city of Rafah is essential for the distribution of humanitarian supplies. Maki talked about how over a million Palestinians are seeking refuge in Rafah.
Emphasizing Japan’s response to the Israel-Gaza conflict, Maki said, “The number of civilian casualties, including a large number of children, women, and elderly people, continues to rise. It is crucial to improve the humanitarian situation as soon as possible and to secure an environment in which humanitarian assistance activities can be carried out to achieve this.”
While stressing condemnation for Hamas’ deadly Oct. 7 assault, Japan’s response to Israel nonetheless reiterates the importance of protecting civilians. Maki wrote.
Additionally, Japan urges compliance with relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions, especially regarding the provision of humanitarian assistance.
She states, “Japan reiterates the importance of the protection of civilians and urges all parties to act in accordance with international law. It includes acting in good faith based on relevant UN Security Council resolutions, including ensuring humanitarian assistance”
Japan’s Response to Israel’s Allegation against UNRWA staff
On January 28, 2024, Kobayashi Maki also shared his views on the allegations about the UNRWA in the Near East. The allegations referred to UNRWA staff member’s involvement in the October 7 terror attack on Israel last year.
Japan will continue to make persistent and active diplomatic efforts to improve the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip and to calm down the situation as soon as possible by providing support to other international organizations.
Japan has suspended additional funding pending the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) investigation. He also urged thorough measures to address the allegations. Despite this, Japan remains committed to supporting humanitarian efforts in Gaza through diplomatic means.
