Amman, 27 February 2024 (TDI): On February 27th, Japan’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Tsuji Kiyoto, discussed the United Nations Relief and Works Agency funding suspension with Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner General of UNRWA.

The Foreign Minister Tsuji emphasized the necessity for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency to take appropriate measures in response to allegations regarding the involvement of its staff in the October 7 terrorist attacks.
He urged the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) to reinforce its governance structures. In response, Commissioner General Lazzarini conveyed the United Nations Relief and Works Agency’s commitment to enhancing governance practices.
Additionally, he expressed the agency’s appreciation for Japan’s longstanding partnership and emphasized the importance of maintaining trust between the two entities.
Both parties underscored their shared concerns regarding the worsening humanitarian situation faced by Palestinian refugees. They agreed to maintain close communication channels.
