Japan-Brunei Foreign Ministers’ telephone talk

Tokyo, 12 August 2021 (TDI): Earlier today, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan Motegi Toshimitsu held a telephone talk with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Brunei Darussalam Dato Seri Setia Haji Erywan bin Pehin Datu Pekerma Jaya Haji Mohd Yusof. At the outset of the talk, Minister Motegi expressed his respect to the leadership of Brunei as the ASEAN Chair at the ASEAN-related Foreign Ministers’ Meeting.

Recently, the newly appointed ASEAN Special Envoy to Myanmar, Minister Erywan received a congratulatory remark from Minister Motegi who had close contact in Myanmar’s situation. Motegi also expressed his support for the future activities of Erywan as the Special Envoy.

Motegi urged Erywan to visit Myanmar without delay and speak not only with the Myanmar military but also with pro-democracy groups, and with the international community.

Japan provided over 20 million dollars of humanitarian assistance to Myanmar. Likewise, Erywan valued Japan’s efforts which further strengthen both minister’s coordination in response to the current situation in Myanmar and work closely towards the Summit Meeting in Autumn.
