Tokyo, 5 April 2022 (TDI): The government of Japan has announced to provide an additional 100 million US dollars as emergency humanitarian assistance to help the Ukrainian people facing hardship because of war in Ukraine and its neighboring countries.

The humanitarian assistance will provide additional emergency assistance. The decision was made by the Japanese Prime Minister, Kishida Fumio.

The aid will respond to urgent needs in areas such as food assistance and food security, health, and medical care. Likewise, it will be utilized to facilitate the protection of displaced people.

The aid will be for Ukraine and neighboring countries; Poland, Moldova, Hungary, Slovakia, Romania, and the Czech Republic. It will be disbursed via nine international organizations and Japanese NGOs.

With the previous aid announced by Japan, this latest humanitarian assistance makes up to 200 million US dollars. The Government of Japan will continue to provide service for and stand by the people of Ukraine facing tribulations.

This will be in collaboration with the international community, including the G7 members.
The organizations involved are the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

Other organizations are the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), and Japanese NGOs.

The Japanese government had earlier also announced financial assistance under Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) Project for Strengthening Preparedness and Response to the COVID-19 and other Emerging Infectious Diseases for Ukrainians.

For this, the Government of Japan has approved the financial support of 9,500,000 USD for the WHO emergency response to address COVID-19 and other infectious diseases in Ukraine as well as its neighboring countries.

Personal protective equipment, medicines, medical devices, and others will be provided to displaced people in Ukraine and neighboring countries, like Poland, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, Czech Republic, and the Republic of Moldova through the WHO Regional Office for Europe (EURO).
