Tokyo, July 7, 2023 (TDI):   HAYASHI Yoshimasa, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a productive, global security-focused meeting on July 6 with Ghada Waly, Executive Director of the UNODC, who is visiting Japan to attend the G7 Justice Ministers’ Meeting and the ASEAN-Japan Special Meeting of Justice Ministers.

The discussion focused on enhancing cooperation in addressing global challenges, particularly in the areas of counter-terrorism, organized crime, cybercrime, and drugs.

Minister Hayashi expressed his warm welcome to Ms. Waly and acknowledged the crucial role played by the UNODC in promoting the rule of law in the face of significant disruptions to the international order.

He reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to collaborating closely with the UNODC to combat terrorism and organized crime, including cybercrime and drugs.

Minister Hayashi emphasized Japan’s determination to contribute to global security and stability.

Executive Director Waly expressed her gratitude for Japan’s longstanding support and contributions to the UNODC’s efforts in combating these pressing issues.

She stressed the importance of international cooperation in promoting the rule of law and anti-corruption as essential elements for global recovery and reconstruction, particularly in regions like Ukraine.
