Iran appreciates South Africa’s stance in ICJ

Tehran, 12 January 2023(TDI): The Foreign Ministry of Iran appreciated and supported the South African government’s efforts to oppose Israeli control at the International Court of Justice.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ), the United Nations’ principal judicial organ, held open meetings on January 11 and 12, 2024, on South Africa’s request for the indication of provisional measures in the case of South Africa versus Israel at the Court’s seat, the Peace Palace in The Hague.

President of the Court, Judge Joan E. Donoghue presided this session. On Thursday, Israel was accused of genocide in Gaza, and the court was urged to compel Israel to cease its military campaign quickly. Meanwhile, Israel has openly denied these allegations.

According to South African lawyers, the ongoing Gaza war is a continuation of Israel’s decades-long oppression of the Palestinian people.

The lawyers also declared in front of the entire world community that this case exemplifies the true spirit of humanity as a whole. They described this massacre as nothing more than the annihilation of Palestinian life, with nobody spared, not even newborn babies.

According to reports, Israel is aiming to rebuild settlements on the ruins of Palestinian homes while taking Palestinian lives in Gaza. Nearly 80% of the world’s hungry people inhabit Gaza, with hunger claiming more Palestinian lives than airstrikes combined.

In addition to this, the Court has received reports of the dreadful number of casualties. Animals pick at the bodies of Palestinians. On average, 270 Palestinians lose their lives each day, including approximately 117 children and 48 mothers, which is equivalent to two lives every hour.

Meanwhile, the Islamic Republic of Iran condemns the Israeli regime’s war crimes against Palestinians and advocates for resistance as a revolutionary action, recognizing the worldwide right of Palestinians to combat occupation.

Furthermore, Iran underscores the importance of international organizations, such as the UN Security Council, to effectively address the Israeli record and put an end to its assaults on Gaza.
