Islamabad, 1 February 2023 (TDI): Today marked the official opening of the International Conference/Workshop on “Science Communication & Community Engagement” sponsored by the Standing Committee for Scientific and Technological Cooperation (COMSTECH).

The chief guest at the opening ceremony was Justice Dr. Syed Muhammad Anwer, Acting Chief Justice of the Federal Shariat Court of Pakistan.

During the event, Justice Dr. Syed Muhammad Anwer emphasized the significance of science communication as a religious obligation for Muslims in his opening remarks.

He stressed that in order for Muslims to live in harmony with nature, they have a duty to pursue and advance scientific education, which they should do.

The participants and experts from 7 countries who will speak at the conference were warmly welcomed by Professor Dr. Muhammad Iqbal Choudhary, the Coordinator General of COMSTECH.

Over 460 people have registered to attend the event, representing the fields of science, media, policymakers, social work, arts and cultures, diplomacy, and the environment.

According to Professor Choudhary, science and society must coexist peacefully because they are two sides of the same coin and cannot survive or advance without the other.

He came to the conclusion that society should direct science’s course and support productive research in order to further its goals and needs.

In addition, Professor Dr. Syed Javaid Khurshid, the conference’s Associate Coordinator, gave an introduction to the event with the goal of building a bridge between scientists and journalists to increase public awareness.

Michael Wadleigh; the UNESCO Coordinator and Oscar-winning filmmaker, Kamran Akhtar; the Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Dr. Mahalectchumy Arujanan, the Director of the Malaysian Biotechnology Information Center (MABIC), spoke during the conference’s opening session.
