International Community Condemns Guinea’s Military Coup

-

Conakry, 6 September 2021(TDI): On Sunday night, the EU, the UN, and the US condemned what has seemed to be a military coup in Guinea.

The overthrow of Guinea’s democratically elected president, Alpha Conde, is widely condemned around the world. A group of soldiers led an uprising in Conakry, Guinea’s capital city, and declared a countrywide curfew until further notice.

Before that, the Nigerian-led government had condemned the junta and demanded the return of Guinea’s first democratically elected leader, Conde.

Josep Borrell, the EU’s foreign policy chief, asked for the immediate release of Guinea President Alpha Conde and denounced the coup.

The US State Department issued a statement titled, On the Military Seizure of Power in Guinea, in which it stated that the United States solemnly condemns the ongoing events in Conakry
