Qingdao, 19 August 2022 (TDI): The International Army Games (IAG) 2022’s Sea Cup surface ship competition got underway on August 15 in the waters near Qingdao, in the Shandong Province of eastern China. The competition will last for a week.

The surface ship contest is part of the International Army Games 2022. The agenda is to promote military collaboration and camaraderie between military personnel.

Chinese and Russian naval vessels joined the ceremony with soldiers on each side welcoming one another. The corvette Gromkiy (Hull No. 335) from the Russian Navy’s Pacific Fleet traveled to Qingdao to compete in the event.

Gromkiy was met by the Chinese PLA Navy’s guided-missile frigate Handan (Hull No. 579), the command ship of the Sea Cup contest (Pacific section).

Frigate Handan escorted the Russian corvette to enter Chinese territorial waters which then anchored at the designated place. Handan is a Type 054A frigate of the People’s Liberation Army Navy. It was commissioned on 16 August 2018.

The Type 054A carries HQ-16 medium-range air defense missiles and anti-submarine missiles in a vertical launching system (VLS) system.
