Harbin sets up China-SCO Ice and Snow sports zone growth

Beijing, 4 April 2024 (TDI): The Chinese State Council has approved an overall plan by the Heilongjiang government and the General Administration of Sport to establish a China-Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) ice and snow sports demonstration zone, as per an official reply released on March 29.

The reply emphasizes the demonstration zone’s pivotal role in promoting exchanges and cooperation in sports, culture, talent, and industries among SCO countries and Belt and Road nations.

The move aligns with President Xi Jinping’s vision outlined at the 22nd SCO Council of Heads of State. The stated meeting was held in September 2022.

Harbin is actively implementing President Xi’s statement. It is striving for the high-quality construction of the core area in the China-SCO Ice and Snow Sports Demonstration Zone. The city aims to become a pioneer in ice and snow sports.

It integrates its strengths into the Belt and Road Initiative. Furthermore, it positions itself as a new growth point in the ice and snow economy.

Highlights of the event

The upcoming China-Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Demonstration Zone Integration and Development Roundtable Conference, is scheduled from January 25th to 27th in Harbin.

It will showcase each demonstration zone’s advantages, influences, backgrounds, and development processes.

Keynote speeches will cover Harbin’s cooperation with Russia. Additionally, these will include industrial park construction, ice and snow sports development, and cultural exchanges.

By 2025, Harbin plans to establish a comprehensive ice and snow sports event system. This includes international competitions and mass events.

Moreover, the city aims to complete the construction of key infrastructure by 2028. The goal is to create industry clusters, renowned tourism destinations, and cooperation projects domestically and internationally.

The inaugural SCO Snow Mountain Bike Race in 2023 marked Harbin’s commitment to developing new ice and snow economy growth points. Furthermore, with upcoming events like the SCO National Cup, Harbin continues to advance as a hub for international ice and snow sports cooperation.

In addition to this, the roundtable conference in Harbin will play a crucial role in establishing the fifth SCO Demonstration Zone in China.

It will integrate high-quality resources into the ice and snow industry. Moreover, it will foster international exchange and cooperation in ice and snow sports.
