Haneef Atmar met with UNSG’s Special Rep. for Afghanistan

Kabul, 3 August 2021 (TDI): Haneef Atmar, Foreign Minister of Afghanistan held a meeting with Deborah Lyons, UN Secretary General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan in Kabul to discuss matters pertaining to the mercurial situation of Afghanistan and the peace talks.

Haneef Atmar delineated the rampant growth of Terrorism in Afghanistan and called on International Community to take notice and punish the criminals in compliance with Internal Law and Mechanisms. He also condemned the attack on United Nations Office in Herat perpetrated by the Taliban.

Atmar noted that Afghanistan cannot itself stand against the Taliban, the country needs the International Community and International Institutions to fight for Human rights in Afghanistan. He urged International Institutions like the UN, ICC, Human Rights Council to make efforts to not only investigate and punish the Taliban but also bring them to Peaceful Political Solutions for the sake of stability of the region.

On her part, Deborah Lyon stressed that the escalating violence in the country must be controlled. Also, she noted that Humanitarian and Development Missions have failed in Afghanistan showing concern on burgeoning death causalities. She also showed gratitude to Afghan authorities for efficient actions against the Taliban in response to their attack at UN Mission.
