Nuuk, 1 October 2021 (TDI): The Greenland-US Joint Committee met last week, on 24 September. Both parties discussed the future work and priorities of the Committee. According to Greenland and the US reaffirmed their commitment to the Common Plan, and reached an agreement with USAID.
USAID AGREEMENT
Minister Pele Broberg and Acting Assistant Administrator USAID, Margot Ellis, signed the agreement. According to the Government of Greenland, the objective of the agreement is to increase economic cooperation, between the US and Greenland. The agreement secured 10 million in funds from USAID, until 2026.
US-GREENLAND COMMON PLAN
Both parties strengthened cooperation when Greenland’s and the US government signed the Common Plan. The Common Plan for the US-Greenland Cooperation in Support of Their Understanding on the Thule Air Base, in Pittufik. According to the Government of Greenland, the bilateral agreement aimed to strengthen cooperation with the US, and future initiatives. The new USAID agreement is another positive step.
Broberg stated that the agreement focuses on increasing the opportunities for Greenland citizens. The Minister mentioned that to achieve this, the authorities sought to create partnerships in the private sector. Broberg also mentioned that the expansion of cooperation with the US is another step for Greenland to open with the world.
Then regarding to the meeting, representatives of the US and Greenland governments met in Nuuk to discuss the Common Plan. According to the Greenland Government, the Joint Committee was established, under the Igaliku agreements of 2004. The Committee intends to achieve the objectives of the Joint Plan through diplomatic engagement and cooperation.
According to the Greenland Government, the goals of the Joint Committee are to strengthen the ties between the US and Greenland through trade and investment, cooperation in the energy and mining sectors, education, cultural, scientific, and environmental cooperation.
