Athens, 3 September 2022 (TDI): The Hellenic Republic of Greece wished the Republic of San Marino today on its National Day. Greece sends best wishes on this happy occasion and the Feast of the Patron Saint Marino.

San Marino: country profile

San Marino National Holiday and Foundation of the Republic is observed on September 3rd each year.

It commemorates the foundation of San Marino on this day in 301 AD by Saint Marinus. The Republic of San Marino is a landlocked nation surrounded by Italy. It is the smallest republic in the world and the oldest existing state in Europe.

San Marino is an independent state, but the European Union does not officially recognize it. San Marino’s constitution is considered the oldest surviving governing document in the world. It was written in 1600 and still applies today.

San Marino is the only remaining Italian city-state and in recognition of its status as one of the oldest republics, San Marino Historic Centre and Mount Titano were included in the list of UNESCO world heritage sites in 2008.

To mark the national day, there are lots of events such as crossbow firing and flag-waving, and concerts. The celebration includes the flag-raising ceremony, the solemn oath, and a military parade. The day ends with a spectacular fireworks display.
