Beijing (TDI): The 2026 Forum on Global Human Rights Governance has opened in Beijing, bringing together officials, experts, and international representatives to discuss the role of development in promoting human rights.
The two-day forum began on Thursday with an opening ceremony and plenary session. More than 400 participants from over 100 countries, along with representatives from the United Nations and other international and regional organizations, are attending the event.
This year’s forum is being held to mark the 40th anniversary of the United Nations Declaration on the Right to Development. The central theme focuses on promoting human rights through development.
Participants are expected to exchange views on global human rights governance and explore ways to strengthen human rights protection through economic development, international cooperation, and shared prosperity.

The forum is also expected to highlight growing global debates on how development-focused policies can address inequality and improve living standards in developing countries. Speakers are likely to share different perspectives on balancing economic growth with social and political rights.
Organizers say the discussions aim to encourage dialogue among countries with differing approaches to human rights governance, while promoting mutual understanding and cooperation on shared global challenges.
