The Group of 77
The G77 is a group of 134 developing nations in the UN, and it got its name from the 77 founding members. China joined the group to further the members’ common economic interests. China also attempted to gain more influence over the global organization by becoming a part of G77.
The Group of 77 was founded in Geneva in 1964, and Pakistan was one of its original members. It is the largest intergovernmental organization of developing nations within the UN.
The Group gives the nations of the so-called Global South the tools they need to express and advance their common economic interests. The group aims to develop south-south relations for development. Pakistan served as the group’s chair in 1977, 1992, and 2007.
