Phnom Penh, 6 August 2022 (TDI): On the sidelines of the 29th ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan, Hayashi Yoshimasa, held a meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, Ali Sabry.

During the meeting, Japanese Foreign Minister, Hayashi Yashimasa, congratulated Minister Sabry on his appointment as Foreign Minister.
Both Foreign Ministers affirmed to further strengthen the bilateral relations to realize a “Free and Open Indo-Pacific”, on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Sri Lanka this year.
Japanese Foreign Minister also expressed his gratitude for condolences from Sri Lanka on the passing of former Japanese Prime Minister Abe.
Both Foreign Ministers agreed that it is important for Sri Lanka to overcome the current economic crisis. Both sides discussed measures to bring Sri Lanka back on track for development at an early date
Foreign Minister Hayashi also referred to the ongoing humanitarian assistance from Japan to Sri Lanka. He said Japan is providing food and medicine at this crucial time in Sri Lanka. In response, Minister Sabry expressed his gratitude for Japan’s support to date.
Japanese Foreign Minister also highlighted Japan’s stance on Russia-Ukraine crisis. He said that Japan is working closely with the international community to implement robust sanctions against Russia and provide support for Ukraine.
Sri Lanka Foreign Minister’s Stance
In response, Foreign Minister Sabry said the mourning of Sri Lanka is the expression of Sri Lankan people’s respect for former Prime Minister of Japan. He also expressed his gratitude for Japan’s support to date.
Foreign Minister Sabry said that the international community must cooperate to deal with the shortages and soaring prices of food and energy resulting from the Russia-Ukraine crisis.
Both ministers also exchanged views on regional affairs, including China and North Korea.
