Beijing, 14 May 2024 (TDI): On Monday in Beijing, discussions took place between Republic of Korea (ROK) Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul and Foreign Minister Wang Yi of China.

Wang, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, emphasizes the need to maintain regular interactions between China and the Republic of Korea as neighboring countries.

During the bilateral talks, Wang stated “China-ROK relations have recently encountered obstacles and complexities, which are contrary to the shared interests of both parties and not aligned with China’s desired outcome”.

Moreover, Wang Yi also stated that “We hope that the Republic of Korea (ROK) will work together with China to maintain good neighborly relations and friendship, adhere to the goal of mutually beneficial cooperation, remove any obstacles, and jointly strive to promote the stable and positive development of China-ROK relations”.

In addition, Yi emphasized that mutual understanding and respect, improved communication and exchanges, the removal of misconceptions, and increased mutual trust are all critical for China and the ROK.

Moreover, Wang also expressed China’s hope that the ROK side would uphold the One-China concept, manage Taiwan-related matters sensibly and appropriately, and solidify the political basis of their bilateral relations.

Furthermore, Wang stated that the two countries should strengthen their mutually beneficial cooperation, be dependable and long-term partners in each other’s development processes, jointly oppose trade protectionism, defend the global free trade system, and ensure stable and unhindered production and supply chains.

Additionally, according to Cho Tae-yul, it is expected to represent an improvement in bilateral relations. The government of the Republic of Korea places a high value on its ties with China. It is eager to collaborate closely with Beijing to create a stronger, more developed strategic cooperative partnership built on reciprocity, respect, and shared interests.

Moreover, Cho Tae-yul stated that it is mutually beneficial for both nations and their people, as well as the international community’s expectations, to enhance the progress of ROK-China relations and collaboratively address shared obstacles.

During the talks, he stated that the Republic of Korea (ROK) is eager to strengthen confidence, broaden agreements, and prioritize collaboration in order to minimize geopolitical limitations and collectively establish a new era of bilateral cooperation.

The two parties also shared perspectives on China-Japan-ROK collaboration, the state of affairs on the Korean Peninsula, and other matters of mutual interest.
