Foreign Minister Pakistan addressed 6th Ministerial Meeting of CICA

Islamabad, 13 October 2021 (TDI): Foreign Minister of Pakistan, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, virtually addressed the 6th Ministerial Meeting of Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA). The meeting took place from 11 to 12 October in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan which is the current chair of CICA.

The key focus of the Foreign Minister’s speech was the developments in Afghanistan, the issue of Kashmir and Palestine.

Views on Afghanistan

Sharing his views on Afghanistan, the Foreign Minister underscored the need for positive engagement of international community in the country. He said it is necessary for ensuring peace, stability, and development in Kabul. Foreign Minister Qureshi also reiterated the notion that isolating Afghanistan at this critical juncture will result in chaos and instability. He urged the international community to assist Afghanistan in its quest for peace and stability.

Foreign Minister Qureshi calls for just resolution of Kashmir and Palestine issue

Furthermore, the Foreign Minister called for a just resolution of the Kashmir issue between Pakistan and India. He stressed that the Kashmir dispute must be resolved as per United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions and the will of Kashmiri people. In addition, he stated sustainable peace in South Asia  will not be possible until the resolution of core dispute of Jammu and Kashmir.

Likewise, Foreign Minister Qureshi talked about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He said there should be a just and lasting settlement of this issue based on a two-state solution as per UNSC resolutions.

During his address, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to CICA’s vision. He said Pakistan is playing its due role towards CICA’s vision of “common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security in Asia.” He also appreciated CICA’s role in promoting dialogue and cooperation in the Asian region.

In addition, the Foreign Minister emphasized enhancing regional connectivity through trade and investment initiatives. He said economic security is top priority of Pakistan and the country looks forward to trade and investment initiatives.

Moreover, the Foreign Minister underscored the need for bringing the Asian continent at par with other regions of the world. He said this will facilitate mutually beneficial trade and people-to-people interactions.

CICA: An Overview

The Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA) is an intergovernmental forum. It aims to promote dialogue in Asia with a view of enhancing regional integration, peace, and stability in the region.

Its members include 27 Asian states, nine observer states, and five international organizations. Kazakhstan’s first President, Nursultan Nazarbayev,  proposed the idea of forming this platform in 1992 at the United Nations General Assembly 47th session. Pakistan is among the founding members of this platform. The first summit of CICA was held in June 2002.
