Chișinău, 22 July 2022 (TDI): The Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration for Moldova, Nicu Popescu, met the Member of Parliament of the United Kingdom, Tobias Ellwood.

Tobias Ellwood, Chair of the House of Commons Defence Select Committee, started his visit to Moldova on Monday. He began his visit by meeting with the President of Moldova, Maia Sandu.

During the meeting, Tobias Ellwood and Nicu Popescu discussed the security situation in the region. They also debated the impact of the war between Russia and Ukraine.

In addition, the two discussed the Ukrainian grain crisis and its impact in the form of a global food crisis.

The foreign minister of Moldova informed the British Parliament member that Moldova has been trying its best to contribute to increasing regional security.

He said that Moldova has done this in the past and will continue to spare no effort in the future as well for the security of the region.

Message by Britain’s Parliament Member

The UK’s parliament member has been very vocal in addressing the security concerns of Moldova. Since the start of the war, he had pleaded with the government of the United Kingdom to help the former Soviet country.

Additionally, he said that military assets should be offered to Moldova. This could help them protect themselves from Russian aggression.

Furthermore, the Chair of the House of Commons Defence Select Committee uploaded a video message on Twitter on Thursday.

In the video, he said that

“We were unable to prevent the Russian invasion of Ukraine but we should not let the same mistake repeat itself”.

To emphasize his point of helping Moldova, he explained that Moldova shares its border with Ukraine. He said that if Russia turns its sights on Odesa after Donbass, the land would be at war too.

It would also have to face the same fate as Ukraine, the same destruction and loss of lives, as alluded to by Britain’s official.

Moreover, he said that the Russian President has clarified his stance that he wants to expand Russia’s influence back on old Soviet Union territory.

With this stance and Ukraine’s war, Moldova has been living in fear of war being one of the former Soviet Union’s lands.

He concluded with the remark that the world should help Moldova upgrade itself as soon as possible.
