Members of European Parliament meet Foreign Minister of Kazakhstan

Nur-Sultan, 23 August 2022 (TDI): The Deputy Prime Minister and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan, Mukhtar Tileuberdi, welcomed and met with a delegation from European Parliament.

The delegation from European Parliament was led by Christian Sagartz, Vice-Chair of the European Parliament’s Sub-Committee on Human Rights.

Other MEPs in the delegations included Ryszard Czarnecki, Vice-Chair of the Committee on Petitions and Chair of Kazakhstan-EU Friendship Group in the European Parliament, Nacho Sanchez, member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, and Silvia Sardone, member of the Committee on Environment, Public Health, and Food Safety.

During the meeting, both sides exchanged views on the current level of relations between the EU (European Union) and Kazakhstan. The two sides also talked about the prospect of developing political dialogue between Kazakhstan and EU institutions.

The Foreign Minister of Kazakhstan informed the visiting delegation about the prospects of a strategic partnership between Kazakhstan and the EU.

He especially talked about the strategic partnership in the fields of security, trade, transport, energy, culture, and rule of law.

Foreign Minister Tileuberdi said, “The timely visit of the EP delegation to Kazakhstan should give additional impetus to strengthening the political and inter-parliamentary cooperation between Kazakhstan and the European Union”.

A key part of the discussion between the two sides was President Kassym Tokayev’s initiatives to modernize Kazakhstan’s political system and reform the economy.

These reforms spearheaded by President Tokayev include introducing amendments to the constitution and building a “New Kazakhstan”.

In response, the Head of the European delegation, Sagartz praised the intensification of political dialogue between Kazakhstan and the EU.

He said, “The European Parliament is closely following the recent development in Central Asia, where Kazakhstan is a key partner of the European Union”.

As part of the visit, the European Parliamentary delegation is also slated to meet Kazakhstan’s other government ministries and department officials.
