First Ambassador of Azerbaijan pays call to Afghan Foreign Minister

Kabul, 15 February 2024 (TDI): Ilham Mammadov, the First Ambassador of Azerbaijan to Afghanistan paid a courtesy call to Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi on Thursday.

Ambassador Mammadov pronounced, “I was delighted to call on Amir Khan Muttaqi, the Foreign Minister of Afghanistan. For the first time in the history of Azerbaijan-Afghanistan relations, the flag of Azerbaijan is flying in Kabul. The Embassy of Azerbaijan has commenced its mission”.

The meeting focused on commencement of diplomatic relations between Afghanistan & Azerbaijan, economic cooperation and several other issues.

Foreign Minister Muttaqi called the opening of the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Kabul an important achievement in bilateral relations between the two countries.

Moreover, He mentioned that the appointment of an ambassadorial level diplomat signifies the strength of the Afghanistan-Azerbaijan friendship.

Minister Muttaqi welcomed the Azeri Ambassador and offered him of all essential support for the Azerbaijan Embassy in Kabul, referring to their relationship as historic.

In the meeting, Minister Muttaqi emphasized the importance of the Lapis Lazuli route for Afghanistan. He stated that the activation of this corridor would connect Afghanistan to Europe.

Additionally, Foreign Minister Muttaqi said that Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan seeks to upgrade its diplomatic presence at the Afghan Embassy in Baku.

Expressing gratitude for Afghanistan’s support to the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, Ambassador Mammadov said that Azerbaijan respects Afghanistan’s sovereignty and independence and does not interfere in Afghanistan’s internal affairs.

Moreover, Mammadov stated that this is the first time in history that the embassy of Azerbaijan is opened in Kabul. He commended the achievements of the Afghan government in ensuring security, stability, countering narcotics, and economic development.

Lastly, Ambassador Mammadov said that there is good space for cooperation between the two countries in several domains that can benefit both countries.
