Islamabad (TDI): In a ceremony celebrating 35 years of the German Friedrich Ebert Foundation (FES) in Pakistan, Senator Sherry Rehman commended its enduring commitment to democracy, social justice, and inclusive dialogue.
“Friedrich Ebert’s message remains alive today: democracy does not sustain itself; it needs democrats to uphold it,” said Senator Rehman. “For a century, FES has played an exemplary role in strengthening democratic institutions, promoting social justice, and fostering constructive dialogue around the world.”
Highlighting FES’s contributions in Pakistan, Senator Rehman lauded the organization’s work in empowering democratic institutions, advancing women’s rights, engaging youth, and promoting transparent governance. “We salute FES Pakistan for its 35-year journey of dedication and partnership,” she remarked.
Reflecting on Pakistan’s own democratic struggle, she recalled the sacrifices of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, noting that her vision continues to guide the nation.
She also underscored the historic ties between Pakistan’s Peoples Party (PPP) and Germany’s Social Democratic Party (SPD), tracing them back to the era of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Willy Brandt. “Our friendship is built on shared values of justice, equality, and respect for human dignity,” she said.

Addressing issues of regional peace and security, Rehman observed that democracy cannot thrive amid instability. “Pakistan has fought terrorism and extremism with unparalleled courage,” she asserted, while warning that India’s “illegal actions and arms buildup” have undermined regional peace.
“Pakistan’s response after the Pahalgam attack was responsible and restrained, unlike India’s provocative conduct,” she stated, cautioning against war rhetoric that threatens peace and livelihoods across South Asia.
Rehman also commended Germany’s principled global stance on human rights and international law, and pointed to Pakistan’s completion of the FATF Action Plan as proof of its dedication to transparency and reform.
“Pakistan and Germany share a relationship based on mutual trust and cooperation — from trade and education to renewable energy,” she noted, highlighting the growing number of Pakistani students pursuing higher education in Germany.
Looking ahead, the senator announced that next year will mark 75 years of Pakistan-Germany diplomatic relations — a milestone she described as an opportunity to deepen partnerships for a peaceful and sustainable future.
“Democracy is not merely a system — it is the courage, compassion, and service of citizens,” Senator Rehman concluded. “This shared belief continues to bind Pakistan and Germany in friendship, grounded in common ideals of progress, peace, and human dignity.”
