Belgium, 6 September 2021 (TDI): Charles Michel, President of the European Council, denounced the attempt to seize power from the President of Guinea, Alpha Conde. The situation of Guinea’s President Alpha Condé is ambiguous in Guinea after an unverified video appeared on national TV.
In the video, the soldiers who claimed that they have overthrown the government surrounded the president. The claim by the soldiers led to heavy gunfire near the presidential place in the capital city of Guinea, Conakry. However, the defense minister of Guinea has rejected such claims and said that the presidential guards have taken the attempted takeover down.
President of the European Council, Charles Michel, stated that the security of the president and the institution should be prioritized. He further stated that we should make some efforts to ensure dialogues and peace, as they are the essence of democracy and a key element to preserve the system.
The West African Country of Guinea has huge importance due to its richness in natural resources, but because of the continuous instability and mismanagement, it stands among the world’s poorest countries.
