EU sympathizes with earthquake victims of Harnai district Pakistan

Islamabad, 07 October 2021 (TDI): The European Union published a message to sympathize with people affected by the earthquake in Harnai district Baluchistan last night. The European Union offered deep condolences to the families of the affected and wished speedy recovery to the injured.

At approximately 3 a.m. on 07 October, an earthquake jolted many areas of Balochistan and did the most damage in the district of Harnai. The magnitude of the earth quake was recorded on rector scale at 5.9. More than twenty people died as a result and more than 100 injured. Relief activities were started by the military forces and NGOs. A trend on Twitter with hashtag ‘HarnaiNeedsHelp’ was also observed.

The European Union has a history of providing relief services to areas affected by earthquake. Last year, after an earthquake hit Croatia, The European Union mobilized support to provide emergency assistance to the affected. Similarly, in 2019, the EU provided support to the people affected by earthquake in Haiti.

In 2019, the EU also provided 300,000 Euros to support the victims of earthquake in Pakistan. On 24 September 2019, a 5.3 magnitude earthquake hit the eastern regions of Pakistan. In that disaster, 40 people lost their lives while another 700 were injured. The EU provided funds via European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO).
