Santiago, 14 June 2023 (TDI): European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is on a crucial visit to Latin American countries, including Brazil, Argentina, Chile, and Mexico, from June 12 to June 16, 2023.

The visit holds significant importance as it aims to reinforce the partnership between the European Union (EU) and Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), focusing on the shared commitment to rules-based international order, democracy, human rights, and global peace and security.

The EU and LAC share a long-standing relationship built on a wide range of agreements. However, the rapidly changing global landscape, marked by geopolitical challenges, calls for the renewal of this partnership and the strengthening of cooperation.

Together, both regions must address pressing issues such as climate change, environmental crises, technological transformations, and growing inequalities.

At this critical juncture, the New Agenda for relations between the EU and LAC serves as a foundation for deepening cooperation.

President von der Leyen’s visit to the region aligns with the upcoming EU-CELAC Summit scheduled for July. This summit will provide an important platform to further consolidate the EU-LAC strategic partnership and discuss shared priorities.

President Ursula von der Leyen’s itinerary includes meetings with regional leaders, including President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil, President Alberto Fernández of Argentina, President Gabriel Boric of Chile, and President Andrés Manuel López Obrador of Mexico.

Additionally, she will engage with local business leaders and stakeholders, emphasizing the significance of collaboration between the EU and LAC.

During her visit, EU President von der Leyen will unveil various projects under the Global Gateway Strategy. These initiatives aim to drive a fair, green, and digital transition, fostering mutual benefits and bringing the EU and LAC regions closer together.

The visit to Brazil, Argentina, Chile, and Mexico will provide President von der Leyen with valuable insights and perspectives to contribute to the success of the upcoming EU-CELAC Summit.

The visit and the initiative demonstrate the EU’s commitment to deepening the EU-LAC partnership, promoting shared values, and addressing global challenges in a united and cooperative manner.
