Brussels, 19 April 2024 (TDI): The European Union initiated the WINBLUE Project to empower women in a Blue Economy to facilitate women’s participation in decision-making positions in five blue economy sectors.
Women are underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) jobs related to the Blue Economy.
The WINBLUE project, funded by the European Maritime Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF), aims to change that. Since May 2023, WINBLUE has been working to empower women in five key Blue Economy sectors.
EMFAF says that women have fewer job opportunities in STEM. Their work in the Blue Economy does not get enough attention or value.
WINBLUE as Problem-Solver
WINBLUE is fixing this problem. EMFAF is doing research and teaming up with others to get more women into top roles in circular blue bioeconomy and biotechnology, aquaculture and fisheries, Offshore renewable energy, sustainable coastal tourism, and adCINEMAvanced enabling technologies (AI, Robotics, ICT) for marine ecosystem protection and restoration.

How WINBLUE Works
The project will look at gender data and start five WINBLUE labs. They will work with public and private partners to design plans for gender equality, make programs to train and coach women. As well as to check how gender inclusivity is going and to find and share successful ways of doing things.
WINBLUE already made a Virtual Community Platform. It is a place to share knowledge, help careers, and make new ideas.
Expected Outcomes
The following are the expected outcomes of WINBLUE:
- WINBLUE Observatory: Keep an eye on women’s roles in the project’s five sectors.
- Training Package: Help partners and others share skills.
- Stakeholder Mapping: Find important people and good strategies.
- Best Practice Sheet: Show top ways of doing things and gender plans for each sector.
- Strategic Agenda: Use good things from WINBLUE labs and project results.
