EU congratulates Ukraine on its independence day

Brussels, 24 August 2023 (TDI): On the occasion of Ukrainian Independence Day, the European Union reaffirms its unwavering commitment to Ukraine, standing in solidarity with the nation as it commemorates its sovereignty.

The EU’s steadfast support has disbursed an additional $1.6 billion of macro-financial assistance, symbolizing the union’s dedication to Ukraine during these challenging times.

As the conflict in Ukraine persists, the European Union, along with its 27 Member States, maintains a resolute stance in providing comprehensive aid to the country.

The EU recognizes the profound impact of Russia’s actions not only on Ukraine but on global security interests, highlighting the imperative of collective action.

Since the outset of Russia’s war on Ukraine, the European Union has acted in tandem with the United States and other partners to impose rigorous sanctions on Russia’s economy and military and to isolate Russia internationally.

The EU has also taken decisive measures to diversify its energy sources and reduce dependence on Russian fossil fuels, effectively countering Russia’s energy-related tactics.

Amid these efforts, the EU has consistently demonstrated its support for Ukraine. To date, the EU and its Member States have offered over $86 billion in financial, military, humanitarian, and refugee assistance.

EU financial support to Ukraine

The EU’s support for Ukraine includes a comprehensive package of measures:

Close to $44 billion in financial and budgetary support, including a notable commitment of $19.8 billion for 2023. This ongoing financial aid serves as a lifeline for Ukraine’s operations, contributing to stability and development.

Over $2 billion in humanitarian aid, emergency assistance, and crisis response, which includes the provision of power generators and the reconstruction of Ukrainian schools.

Close to $23 billion in military aid, spanning ammunition, air-defense systems, tanks, and fighter jets. The EU also plays a substantial role in training the Ukrainian armed forces.

Up to $18 billion from the EU budget to aid Ukrainian refugees who have sought temporary protection in EU Member States.

Over $1 billion to enhance “EU Solidarity Lanes,” enabling Ukrainian food exports to the global market to address the food security crisis caused by the conflict.

The EU’s solidarity extends beyond financial and military aid. The union has suspended import duties for exports from Ukraine, fostering economic stability and growth.
