Doha, 02 October 2021(TDI): European Union’s High Representative for External Affairs, Josep Borell visited Qatar and met high ranking officials including the Qatari Emir and the Foreign Minister of Qatar, Muhammad bin Abdurrehman Al Thani.
Borrel later addressed a press conference in Doha, Qatar. He appreciated Qatar’s concern for global issues like climate change, post-pandemic economic recovery, and renewable energy.
Josep Borrell remarked that both the EU and Qatar have plans to increase economic cooperation and build a strategic partnership. He appreciated Qatar’s cooperation on major global issues. He mentioned Qatar as a ‘good friend’ of Europe.
European Union is the second-largest market for Qatar. On the other hand, Qatar is a reliable source of energy supplier for the European Union. Borrell stated that European Union will hold an important event next year to expand the bilateral relationship and increase cooperation on several fronts.
The trade between European Union and Qatar stands close to $10bn annually. This figure is considered to be hampered because of the pandemic. The EU External Affairs Minister commented that this figure has a huge potential and more should be done to increase the flow of goods and services between the two parties.
