Brussels, 5 July 2023 (TDI): The European Union (EU) has strongly condemned the decision of Hong Kong authorities to issue arrest warrants for eight pro-democracy activists who are residing outside of Hong Kong.

The warrants were issued under the controversial National Security Law, further exacerbating the EU’s existing concerns.

The EU emphasizes the extra-territorial application of the National Security Law, which is regarded as a violation of international norms.

This development raises serious apprehensions about the erosion of fundamental rights and freedoms in Hong Kong.

In response to these concerning developments, the EU calls upon China to uphold its international commitments and to fully respect the “One Country, Two Systems” principle, which was agreed upon during the transfer of sovereignty over Hong Kong from the United Kingdom to China.

The EU underscores the importance of safeguarding the autonomy and freedoms of Hong Kong in accordance with the Basic Law, which guarantees the exercise of fundamental rights and liberties.

The EU firmly believes that respect for human rights, the rule of law, and democratic principles are of paramount importance.

It also reiterates its commitment to supporting the people of Hong Kong in their pursuit of these values.

The arrest warrants for pro-democracy activists residing outside of Hong Kong raise serious concerns about the extraterritorial reach of the National Security Law.
