Islamabad, 21 August 2024 (TDI): ECO Secretary General Amb. Dr. Asad Majeed Khan is a citizen of Pakistan. Starting his term in August 2024, he is the 14th Secretary General of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO).
The ECO Council of Ministers (COM) selects and appoints the Secretary General of the Organization from among the candidates nominated by Member States, taking into account their qualifications, experience, and eligibility as outlined in the ECO Staff Regulations. The appointment is for a three-year non-renewable term.
Since the establishment of the organization more than 32 years ago, Dr. Asad Majeed Khan will be the third secretary general from Pakistan to head the Tehran-based ECO. His tenure as secretary general would last for three years.
Asad would visit the ECO headquarters in July, The News was informed on Thursday by reliable diplomatic sources. The organization’s members, with a combined population of almost 600 million, are Pakistan, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Iran, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Afghanistan.
Dr. Asad M. Khan has represented Pakistan as an ambassador to the US, the EU/Belgium, and Japan. Before Dr. Syrus Sajad Qazi took over as foreign secretary last year due to his superannuation, he served in that capacity.

The honorable secretary general is in charge of overseeing all organizational operations to make sure they comply with the organization’s stated policies and programs, as well as its intended goals and objectives, in his capacity as chief administrative officer.
