Ashgabat, 31 March 2023 (TDI): The Deputy Foreign Minister of Turkmenistan, Mahri Bashimova visited the United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York.

On March 29, the Deputy Foreign Minister met with senior UN officials, including Natalia Gherman, Assistant Secretary-General and Executive Director of the Counter-Terrorism Executive Directorate.

She also met Miroslav Jena, Assistant Secretary-General for Europe, Central Asia, and the Americas, and the Secretary-acting General’s Special Representative for Central Asia.

During his conversation with Gherman, the Deputy Foreign Minister emphasized Turkmenistan’s efforts to combat terrorism and promote regional stability.

Likewise, she highlighted the country’s willingness to continue working closely with the UN and its partners to address transnational challenges.

While Natalia Gherman on her part praised Turkmenistan’s commitment to regional peace and security, as well as Turkmenistan’s contribution to strengthening multilateral cooperation with UN counterterrorism entities.

During the meeting with Miroslav Jena, the Deputy Minister discussed possibilities for wider collaboration to strengthen preventive diplomacy mechanisms in Central Asia and globally.

The two officials discussed methods to strengthen Turkmenistan-UNRCCA cooperation in promoting regional peace and security.

He praised Turkmenistan’s leadership in promoting regional stability and expressed strong support for the country’s international initiatives.

Particularly the holding of high-level UN General Assembly debates on Central Asia’s Zone of Peace, Trust, and Cooperation, as well as the establishment of the Central Asian Youth Dialogue for Peace.

During the aforementioned meetings, the Deputy Foreign Minister expressed her gratitude to the UN officials for the warm welcome and hospitality extended to Turkmenistan’s delegation.

Along these lines, she also underscored Turkmenistan’s continued commitment to working closely with the UN to promote peace, security, and development in the region and beyond.
