Historical overview of the day:

Each year, Vietnam celebrates its Independence day on the 2nd of September. The day commemorates the memory of the Declaration of Independence for Vietnam from France and Japan.

On that day in 1945, Ho Chi Minh announced the sovereignty of Vietnam from all foreign powers. Ho Chi Minh was the founder of Viet Minh, a coalition formed for the Independence of Vietnam.

However, the country’s name was set as the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. It was only after 1976 when North and South Vietnam finally united into one country establishing the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
