New Delhi (TDI): India’s opposition Congress party on Wednesday expressed concern over China’s recent claims that it helped mediate the India-Pakistan truce following the military flare-up in May, urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi to clarify the matter.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stated on Tuesday that Beijing had played a mediating role in resolving contentious issues between India and Pakistan in 2025. This comes amid repeated denials by India that any third-party mediation, whether by the US or China, was involved in the ceasefire. New Delhi has maintained that the decision to halt hostilities was taken after a direct call between the Indian and Pakistani directors general of military operations.
“China’s claims of mediating between India and Pakistan are concerning, not just because they contradict what has been communicated to the country’s people, but also because they appear to undermine our national security,” Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said in a social media post.
Wang Yi, speaking at a Beijing conference on China’s foreign relations, highlighted the broader geopolitical challenges of 2025, saying, “Local wars and cross-border conflicts flared up more often than at any time since the end of World War II. Geopolitical turbulence continued to spread.”

He added that China has sought to build lasting peace by addressing both symptoms and root causes of conflict. Citing Beijing’s approach, Wang claimed that China had mediated in multiple international hotspots, including northern Myanmar, the Iranian nuclear issue, tensions between Pakistan and India, disputes between Palestine and Israel, and the recent conflict between Cambodia and Thailand.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs has not officially responded to Wang’s statements, leaving questions about the role of third-party mediation in the May ceasefire unresolved.
