London, 9 August 2022 (TDI): The Commonwealth Games 2022 came to an end on Monday after the stunning closing ceremony that brought down the flag of this year’s edition at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham.
Closing Ceremony
The Commonwealth Games 2022 came to an end on Monday after 11 days of intense competition and concluded as the biggest Commonwealth Games ever. Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, officially declared the game closed during the final ceremony.
This year’s Birmingham Games hosted more than 5,000 athletes from 72 nations and territories. Over the 11 days of competition, 877 medals were awarded to athletes from various nations.
Additionally, the Singaporean table tennis player, Feng Tianwei received with the prestigious David Nixon award. Feng Tianwei is a 13-time Commonwealth Games medalist.
The David Nixon award is presented to the most outstanding athlete of the Commonwealth Games. The award is based upon the player’s performance, level of commitment, fair play and overall contribution to the team.

Flag passing ceremony
During the closing ceremony, the Games flag was lowered and the baton was handed over to Victoria, Australia which will host the next edition of the Commonwealth Games. The next edition is scheduled to take place in March 2026.
The Australian edition will be the first multi-city Commonwealth Games in Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo and Gippsland.

Pakistan at the Commonwealth Games 2022
The Pakistani contingent at the Commonwealth Games 2022 comprised 103 athletes, coaching staff and officials. Over the course of 11 days, the contingent performed exceptionally well and bagged several medals.
Pakistani athletes bagged 2 gold medals and recorded history. The first gold medal was won by Nooh Dastagir Butt in Men’s Weighlifting category. Nooh recorded history with a lift of 405kg.
Moreover, the second gold medal was secured by Arshad Nadeem on Monday. Arshad recorded history in the Javelin Throw category with his record distance of 90.18 metres.
Additionally, Pakistani wrestlers Muhammad Sharif Tahir and Ali Asad bagged silver and bronze medals respectively in the Men’s Freestyle 74kg Wrestling category. Whereas, Zaman Anwar won a silver medal in the Men’s Freestyle 125kg final.
In the Men’s Freestyle 65kg Wrestling category, Inayat Ullah bagged a bronze medal for Pakistan. Another bronze medal was bagged by Shah Hussain Shah in Judo, -90kg category. Shah’s medal was also the first medal won by Pakistan at the Commonwealth Games 2022.
Another athlete from the Pakistani contingent, Shajar Abbas secured 4th position in the 100 metres Heat Race category.
Moreover, a female umpire was also appointed from Pakistan at the Games. Beenish Hayat became the first female hockey umpire at the Commonwealth Games 2022.
Pakistani badminton player, Ghazala Siddiqui, also performed exceptionally well in the Women’s Singles category. She defeated her counterpart from Falkland Island in the round of 64 matches in two straight sets. In the two sets, she won by 4-21 and 3-21.
