Mexico City, 9 August 2022 (TDI): The Republic of Ghana and the United Mexican States celebrated 61 years of bilateral relations on Monday. Both states looked forward to strengthening their bilateral ties for the benefit of their people.

Historical Overview

This year 2022 marked more than six decades of historic cooperation between Mexico and Ghana. Both the states embarked on this journey with the ambition of strengthening relations between their government and people.

Moreover, Mexico supported Ghana throughout its independence struggle. On 8 August 1962, Mexico became the first state in Latin America to establish diplomatic relations with Ghana.

Furthermore, both the states later appointed their Ambassadors in each other’s territories and further expanded this bilateral partnership. Even though there is a geographic distance between the states but their desire for peace and prosperity brought the two states closer for stronger cooperation.

Mexico and Ghana’s bilateral relations

The memorandum of understanding signed by the Foreign Ministers of the two states developed a platform of cooperation. This allows the nations to resolve issues of common interest and continue the building of better strategic relations.

Moreover, the trade projects between Mexico and Ghana are also significant. Grown products like cocoa products from Ghana are traded to Mexico. The bilateral trade expansion among both states provides greater opportunities to the agriculture, textile, and health sectors, amongst others.

Furthermore, the Nixtamalization Program involves traditional Mexican techniques to process maize removing toxins to increase its nutrition. The project has produced great outcomes so far.

Additionally, there are also a large number of Ghanaian students studying in Mexico. The governments of both countries prioritize their people and education. Moreover, the factors of cultural backgrounds and heritage are the driving factors that bring the people of both states closer.
