Beijing/Montreal, 19 December 2022 (TDI): On 15 December, Chinese President, Xi Jinping, delivered a video message to the opening of the High-Level Segment of COP15 Part 2.
This was the 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity aka COP15 which was held in Montreal, Canada.
President Xi pointed out that humanity lives in a community with a shared future, and that solidarity and cooperation is the only effective way to address global challenges. President Xi in his message proposed several ways for biodiversity protection.
Address by Xi at COP15
Xi said that to build global consensus towards biodiversity protection, joint work for the conclusion of the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework should be done. He added that targets and pathways leading to global biodiversity protection should be adopted.
Moreover, the President of China highlighted that to achieve biodiversity protection, ideas should be turned into real actions. Also, developing countries should be given support in capacity-building.
It was also said that coordination needs to be done to address climate change, biodiversity loss, and other global challenges.
Furthermore, to promote green development through biodiversity protection, green transition in development modes and lifestyles should be encouraged.

In addition, promoting the Global Development Initiative (GDI) will deliver greater benefits to people of all countries.
Additionally, Xi suggested that for a fair global order on biodiversity protection, true multilateralism, firm support for the UN-centered international system, and the international order given by international law should be adopted.
President Xi stressed that China has made active efforts to promote ecological progress and biodiversity protection. Also, the diversity, stability, and sustainability of China’s ecosystem have kept improving.
He underlined that China will continue to plan its development for promoting stable co-existence between man and Nature.
In this regard, China will respond to the Action Plan for the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. It will also launch a large number of key projects on biodiversity protection.
They will provide support to developing countries through the Belt & Road Initiative (BRI), International Green Development Coalition, & the Kunming Biodiversity Fund.
These proposals presented at COP15 may lead global biodiversity governance to a new height. Xi also underscored that China will deepen international exchanges and cooperation.
