Chinese Foreign Minister meets with American Secretary of State

Rome, 1 November 2021 (TDI): The Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with the American Secretary of State Antony Blinken on the sidelines of the Group of 20 (G20) summit in Rome, Italy. The Chinese Foreign Minister urged for regular dialogue to increase cooperation between the two leading states of the world.

One-China policy

Wang Yi also urged the United States to stay committed to its historical one-China policy. Taiwan issue has been in the headlines of global affairs. It has been also a sensitive issue between the United States and China recently. Chinese Foreign Minister stressed that the U.S. should stay committed to its policy of a united one-China. He emphasized that there is only China and Taiwan is part of China. He further said that failure in handling this sensitive issue will harm the relations of the two states. The deterioration in the issue will disturb the peace and stability of the region, he added. The Chinese Foreign Minister urged the U.S. to abandon its support for the independence of Taiwan.

US to act responsibly

American State Secretary Antony Blinken also stressed enhancing cooperation and strengthening bilateral ties based on mutual respect. He agreed with the Chinese Foreign Minister to increase communication and dialogue between the two states. He said that the U.S. does not want confrontation with China and is willing to manage the differences through diplomacy. The American State Secretary stressed that the U.S. wants to oversee the competition with China responsibly as the two states are the largest economies in the world. Antony Blinken made it clear in the meeting that the U.S. is committed to its one-China policy and there has been no change in American foreign policy towards Taiwan. He urged China to not take any action unilaterally to disturb the peace and stability of the region.

Cooperation instead of confrontation

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi urged the U.S. to treat China equally. He also opposed the American foreign policies formulated against China. Wang Yi further said that the countries have greater to gain from the cooperation instead of losing in confrontation. The two countries will be equally benefited. He said that China has suffered a lot due to the wrong policies of the U.S.

Discussion on global issues

They also discussed global issues including climate change, Iran Nuclear Talks, recent developments in Afghanistan, the energy crisis, the Korean peninsula situation, the Coronavirus pandemic, and the Myanmar issue. They agreed on maintaining communications to enhance their cooperation and to play a leading role in sustainable development in the world.
