Beijing, 1 September 2021 (TDI): Beijing announced the secret visit of the Special Envoy for Asian Affairs of China, Sun Guoxiang, to Myanmar, on Tuesday. Sun Guoxiang paid a week-long visit to Myanmar, from 21 to 28 August. Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Wang Wenbin informed in a press conference about the details of Sun Guoxiang’s visit.
Wang told the press that during his visit, Sun discussed the structure of the state’s government in the future with Myanmar junta leader Min Aung Hlaing, Union Minister for Foreign Affairs Wunna Maung Lwin, and Union Minister for Union Government Office Yar Pyae. They also exchanged views on cooperation to prevent the surge of COVID-19.
Wang further added that Myanmar has China’s support in the struggle to re-stabilize institutions and society, and cooperate with the ASEAN. The other side agreed and assured cooperation in all China’s mentioned concerns during the meeting.
Myanmar is one of the important countries in China’s Belt and Road Initiative; the country has linked Southwest China to the Indian Ocean with a new sea-road-rail passage.
