BEIJING (TDI): President of China, Xi Jinping, on Wednesday held key talks with Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in Beijing on Wednesday, Spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
According to reports, during the meeting China and Sri Lanka agreed on enhancing economic cooperation and expanding investment.
The two countries signed a total of 15 cooperation documents, including agreements to cooperate on economic and technological development and aligning China’s ‘Belt and Road Initiative’ with Sri Lanka’s 2030 digital economy blueprint, Reuters reported.
Dissanayake visited China after having first travelled to India, perceived as a rival country of China in the region.

Colombo has secured $10 b loan from China, Japan and India last June and a $12.5 billion bondholder deal in December, according to the Reuters’ report.
China, Sri Lanka Cooperation
According to a message posted on X by Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, “China and Sri Lanka have seen a deepening strategic cooperative partnership based on sincere mutual assistance and ever-lasting friendship and fruitful outcomes in high-quality Belt and Road cooperation and multi-sectoral exchanges and cooperation, which have delivered tangible benefits to their peoples.”

China is interested in regional connectivity and BRI projects with benefits for regional countries.

It has been continuously in diplomatic contacts with the South Asian countries for development and BRI projects.
