New York, 11 November 2021 (TDI): The Representative of China to the United Nations (UN), Ambassador Zhang Jun participated in the discourse on Ethiopia at the UN Security Council (UNSC). He said that Ethiopia is a capable country with wisdom.
Ambassador Zhang underscored that China has confidence in the people of Ethiopia to stay united at this crucial crossroads. China believes the country has the capability to efficiently resolve the differences within. Ethiopia is competent to bring the country on the right track and establish peace and stability.
Ethiopia has been facing an armed conflict since last year. The conflict has displaced more than two million people, killed thousands, and thrust the country into a famine. Tigray was the starting point of the conflict. Combatants drove the government troops out from Tigray, in June. Tigray is located in the northern region of the country.
The Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Abiy Ahmed highlighted that the conflict led by rebel fighters is leading the country to its demise. Earlier, this month the Ethiopian government declared a state of emergency. The conflict has resulted in massacres, extensive sexual violence, and other human-rights infractions.
China supports Ethiopia’s need to resolve the crisis for the stability of the country. Earlier China also censured the US’ threat of sanctions on Ethiopia. China emphasized that the country has the ability to handle the situation without external interference. Impositions of sanctions will only escalate the turmoil in the Horn of Africa nation.
