China responds on US diplomatic boycott of Beijing Olympics

New York, 8 December 2021 (TDI): Chinese Mission to the United Nations (UN) has released a statement on the US announcement of the diplomatic boycott of the forthcoming Beijing Olympics.

The spokesperson of the Chinese mission to the UN responded to the US boycott of the Beijing Olympics 2022. He condemned the US announcement of the boycott and stated that the US should not politicize sports. The US is trying to create divisions in the world by following its mentality of the Cold War, he added.

He stated that in the world of multilateralism, the US announcement of the diplomatic boycott emphasizes US unilateral decisions in the world. It will fail in politicizing sports and will not get any support from the international community, added the Chinese mission to the UN spokesperson.

He stated that as the host country, China welcomes all the athletes and guests from the world. Beijing Winter Olympics will be successful with or without the participation of the US, he added.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson also condemned the US diplomatic boycott

Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Zhao Lijian in the Chinese Foreign Ministry regular press conference on 8 December 2021 condemned the US decision of the boycott. He highlighted the US announcement violates the principle of political neutrality enshrined in the Olympic Charter.

Zhao urged the US to abandon its malicious attempts to undermine the Beijing Olympics. He further stated that it will harm the bilateral dialogue and cooperation of the two states in regional and international issues.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson highlighted that the Beijing Olympics 2022 is an important event for the world’s winter sports lovers and athletes. They are waiting for the event to start.  The US should avoid hurting the sentiments of sports lovers, he added.

Note that the Beijing Winter Olympics 2022 will start on 4 February 2022. Athletes from the whole world will be representing their countries and will be trying to win medals for their countries. China has been preparing for the event for months. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has recognized the efforts of China for the success of the Beijing Olympics.
