Beijing (TDI): Chinese President Xi Jinping reaffirmed China’s commitment to supporting Pacific Island nations in combating climate change during a meeting with Samoan Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mata’afa in Beijing on Tuesday.
Highlighting China’s emphasis on global climate cooperation, President Xi said empowering Pacific Island countries to address climate challenges is a cornerstone of China’s engagement in the region.
He pledged China’s support in implementing international climate agreements, including the Paris Agreement, while advocating for fairness and the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities, according to Xinhua.
“China is dedicated to advancing shared global interests and building a community with a shared future for mankind,” Xi stated, emphasizing his government’s alignment with the priorities of the Global South.
Samoa, which was among the first Pacific Island countries to establish diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China nearly five decades ago, was praised for its enduring partnership with Beijing.
Xi noted that bilateral ties have been marked by mutual respect, equal treatment, and win-win cooperation.

President Xi reiterated China’s support for Samoa in safeguarding its sovereignty and independence while pursuing a development model suited to its national context.
He also pledged continued assistance in economic and social development, emphasizing collaboration in areas such as trade, investment, agriculture, and fisheries.
China’s assistance to Pacific Island nations comes without political conditions, Xi assured, adding that Beijing’s policies in the region are inclusive and free from geopolitical competition or influence.
Samoa’s Eagerness to Learn from China’s Modernization Experience
Prime Minister Mata’afa expressed Samoa’s eagerness to learn from China’s modernization experience, particularly in poverty alleviation and green development.
She thanked China for its longstanding support, reaffirming Samoa’s adherence to the one-China policy and its endorsement of Xi’s Global Development Initiative, Global Security Initiative, and Global Civilization Initiative.

“Samoa regards China as an important strategic partner and looks forward to advancing bilateral relations as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of our diplomatic ties next year,” Mata’afa remarked.
The meeting underlined China’s growing influence in the Pacific, as both nations pledged to deepen their collaboration on critical issues, particularly climate resilience and sustainable development.
