Addis Ababa, 4 December 2021 (TDI): The State Councilor and Minister of Foreign Affairs of China, Wang Yi visited Ethiopia. His visit to the country is noteworthy as it came right after the Ethiopian government urged the Western countries to stop the panic and fear-mongering.
Whilst visiting the country, Wang Yi held a joint press briefing with the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia, Demeke Mekonnen. He reiterated the stance of China on the current situation in Ethiopia and stated that China stands against any and every interference in the internal affairs of Ethiopia.
He underscored China’s confidence in Ethiopia and affirmed its support for the country’s Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed. China believes that the Ethiopians can solve their problems amicably along with stabilizing the country’s situation. Earlier last month, the Chinese representative to the UN also reiterated China’s stance at the UNSC.
The Ethiopian Foreign Minister on his part welcomed his Chinese counterpart to Ethiopia. He appreciated China’s consistent support for his country.
Discussion on Ethiopia’s prevailing situation
The two counterparts also held a discussion on the country’s prevailing situation and the violence perpetrated by the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF). The TPLF insurgents are wreaking havoc by destroying lives and property in the country. Moreover, they have rebuffed all peace overtures extended by the Ethiopian government.
The Ethiopian Foreign Minister emphasized that his country is supporting the peace initiatives of the African Union at the same time as committing that his government is ready to adopt a peaceful resolution for the ongoing crisis.
Furthermore, Demeke Mekonnen lauded the time-honored strong relations and pleasant bilateral bond that China and Ethiopia enjoy by respecting mutual interest, trust, and equality, between the two countries.
He expressed that the visit of the Chinese Foreign Minister is the embodiment of solidarity between the two partners. It reflects the real strength and depth of the strategic partnership as well as the political trust between the two countries.
