China Condemns U.S. Visa Restrictions

Beijing, 4 June 2024 (TDI): Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning expressed a stern reproach towards the United States for its blatant interference in China’s domestic affairs during a regular news briefing on Monday. In addition, Ning also condemns U.S visa restrictions during her briefing.

Furthermore, Mao addressed the recent declaration made by the spokesperson of the U.S. State Department concerning limitations on visas for officials from the Chinese Central Government and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government. The announcement was made regarding the verdict handed down by the Hong Kong court concerning individuals implicated in a case of conspiring to commit subversion.

Mao claimed that the United States deliberately violated the principle of “one country, two systems,” slandered the Law on Safeguarding National Security in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), imprudently condemned democracy and freedoms in Hong Kong, sought to meddle in HKSAR’s judicial matters, and abused visa restrictions.

“These actions blatantly infringe upon China’s internal affairs, violate international law, and ignore fundamental principles that govern global relations.” China expressed strong condemnation and opposition to it, as indicated by Mao.

In addition, Mao argued that the “primary election” organized by individuals involved in the case, who have anti-China views and seek to destabilize Hong Kong, poses a significant danger to the constitutional structure of Hong Kong and poses a risk to national security.

“Among the individuals implicated in the case, 31 have already confessed their guilt,” Mao asserted, highlighting the justifiability and legality of law enforcement and judicial authorities in the HKSAR carrying out their duties in compliance with the law. The Central Government strongly supports the objective of penalizing any actions that endanger national security.

Mao stressed that issues related to Hong Kong are solely China’s internal affairs and do not permit any outsider interference.

Additionally, the spokeswoman stressed that China is urging the United States to genuinely uphold China’s sovereignty and the rule of law in Hong Kong, while also abiding by international law and fundamental principles that govern international relations.

“The United States should abstain from intervening in Hong Kong affairs,” Mao declared, underscoring that if the United States imposes visa restrictions on officials from the Central administration and the HKSAR administration, China will retaliate with determined countermeasures and strongly condemns U.S visa restrictions”.
