Beijing, 1 November 2021 (TDI): The government of the People’s Republic of China has recently signed an agreement with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP). The two will collaborate to tackle emergency, food and nutrition operations in Timor-Leste.
Chinese Government will contribute through its South-South Cooperation Assistance Fund. The fund will assist WFP to provide specialized, nutritious foods to more than 12,000 pregnant and breastfeeding mothers. Mothers in 13 municipalities in Timor-Leste are at risk of malnutrition.
Timor-Leste is one of the most vulnerable countries with regard to Climate Change. That is the reason that the nation is serious about the threat and is also attending COP26 in Glasgow, Scotland. Earlier this year the island nation fell prey to Cyclone Seroja. The cyclone damaged infrastructure and agricultural lands. The aftermath of the cyclone created a disaster; as already the country was struggling economically because of Covid-19.
Sixi Qu, the Country Director and Representative of WFP-China appreciated China’s help. The Director said that the contribution will help during the critical situation. Climate change and the COVID-19 pandemic have instigated new hardships and increased food insecurity in Timor-Leste. He further reiterated that WFP is committed to helping the people of Timor-Leste to tackle hunger and restore livelihoods.
The United Nations World Food Programme is the largest humanitarian organization saving lives in emergencies. It provides food assistance for people recovering from conflict, disasters, and the impact of climate change. It is also the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate.
