Santiago, 3 October 2022 (TDI): Chile extended its wishes to Germany on the German Unity Day, celebrated in commemoration of 32 years since the reunification of Germany.
German Unity Day
The German Unity Day is a national day in Germany that is celebrated as a public holiday each year on the 3rd of October.
This day is celebrated to observe the reunification of Germany in 1990 when after 1945 East Germany (German Democratic Republic) and West Germany (Federal Republic of Germany) were united.
Germany was divided into East and West sectors by occupying forces, following World War II. To keep the sectors separated, a wall was built in 1961 known as the Berlin wall.
After years of peaceful protest, the wall was torn down in 1989 and a unification treaty was signed in 1990. The reunification of Germany was formally completed on October 3, 1990, after which this date is celebrated as a public holiday in Germany each year.
This day has historic significance for the people of Germany as it not only commemorates the reunification of the country but also this day marked the end of the Cold War with the fall of the Berlin wall. The public holiday on this day is celebrated traditionally with a three-day festival each year.
