Dakar, 9 February 2022 (TDI): Lions of Teranga have won the AFCON 2021 making Senegal the champion of the 33rd AFCON. AFCON stands for Africa Cup of Nations. The victorious Senegalese squad was given a fervent welcome in Dakar.

Fans gathered to welcome the winners led by match-winner Sadio Mane. Sadio Mane was also given the title of the player of the tournament because he converted the winning kick in the penalty shootout.

Senegalese national football team or the Lions of Teranga as they are commonly known, achieved their long-awaited AFCON glory with Mane’s help, after two previous defeats in the finals.

Senegal had reached the final twice before, once losing to Algeria in 2019 and the second time suffering a penalty shoot-out defeat against Cameroon, in 2002. The whole country is rejoicing at the remarkable success of the Senegalese team.

Moreover, Senegalese President Macky Sall also declared a national holiday to mark the achievement. Massive crowds converged on the roads to welcome the victorious squad.

The President awarded the members of the Senegalese national football team with the National Order of the Lion. The players and the technical staff will be awarded 50 million FCFA, and plots of land in Dakar and Diamniadio.

2021 Africa Cup of Nations

The 2021 Africa Cup of Nations is also known as the Total Energies 2021 Africa Cup of Nations. It was held in Cameroon this year. This year’s tournament is the 33rd edition of the Africa Cup of Nations.

The AFCON is a biennial international men’s football championship of Africa that is organized by the Confederation of African Football.
